About Us

Campbell’s ATA Black Belt Academy has proudly served the Bangor, Maine community since 2011, offering high-quality martial arts instruction to students of all ages. Originally founded by Ron and Brenda Campbell, the school was purchased in June 2025 by Mr. Cody Obropta, a 5th Degree Black Belt and passionate martial artist with 25 years of experience in Songahm Taekwondo.

While ownership has changed, the heart and mission of the school remain the same. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell will continue supporting the transition throughout the summer of 2025, ensuring a seamless continuation of the school’s values, community, and training excellence. Mr. Campbell, a decorated martial artist, is a 2007 ATA World Champion in Sparring and the only World Champion from the State of Maine to date. Under his leadership, the Bangor school has thrived since its opening in May 2011.

Meet Our School Owner & Program Director – Mr. Cody Obropta

Mr. Obropta began his martial arts journey in the year 2000 after his mother—an elementary school principal—was inspired by a student’s confident Taekwondo demonstration during show-and-tell. She enrolled him with the hope that martial arts would build his confidence and reinforce the discipline and focus she and his father had instilled at home. Twenty-five years later, Mr. Obropta continues to train and now leads the next generation of martial artists.

A 5th Degree Black Belt in Songahm Taekwondo and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Warrior Krav Maga, Mr. Obropta is currently working toward his 6th Degree Black Belt and Master Instructor certification. His teaching philosophy centers on personal growth, leadership, and life skills development. As a graduate of the ATA’s Leadership and Legacy programs, he credits his martial arts training with developing his confidence, public speaking, and communication skills—traits that have made him successful in every aspect of life.

Outside of Taekwondo, Mr. Obropta is a licensed professional civil engineer with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. His ability to confidently lead groups, speak publicly, and mentor others has translated into both his professional and martial arts careers. His mission as the school’s new owner is to empower students to develop the same strong foundation that shaped his own journey—from confident child to leader, instructor, and professional.

Our Instructors

We are proud to have a team of passionate, experienced, and community-driven instructors who are dedicated to helping students grow on and off the mat.

Mr. Tim-Ming Fung, a 3rd Degree Black Belt and University of Maine graduate, has been a key figure at Campbell’s ATA for many years. Known for his strong technical skills, clear instruction, and mentorship, Mr. Fung plays a vital role in shaping the quality of our classes and the confidence of our students.

Mr. Andrew Ford, a 2nd Degree Black Belt and a full-time public school teacher in Ellsworth, brings both educational expertise and martial arts experience to our program. He has been an outstanding role model for our students and is also the proud parent of ATA students who are on the path toward their professional degrees.

Ms. Sarah Ford, a 3rd Degree Black Belt and high school student, is one of our rising young instructors. Despite her age, she brings maturity, leadership, and skill to every class she leads. Both Sarah and her father, Mr. Ford, are decorated martial artists with multiple Maine State Champion titles. Their dedication to excellence and mentorship makes them both invaluable members of our instructor team.

Our Mission

At Campbell’s ATA, we are more than a martial arts school—we are a leadership and life-skills academy.
